My spouse has presented me with a marital settlement agreement. Should I consult with an attorney even if everything looks fine to me?

It is critical that you consult with an attorney prior to signing anything having to do with separation and/or divorce. Any agreement presented to you should be reviewed by an attorney who can advise you of its impacts. Marital settlement agreements often include provisions that you may believe you understand but which have unrecognized unintended, negative consequences for you. Furthermore, your spouse’s proposed marital settlement agreement will likely exclude provisions required for your protection (which you will not recognize).
