Harassment on the Internet
The Internet has made it easy to reveal or criticize others allegedly bad behavior. While posting negative comments online might be a tempting way to right a perceived wrong, it could lead to legal trouble for the poster. In one recent Internet harassment case, a Northern Virginia family won a $1.4 million dollar verdict against a defendant for online stalking, defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The evidence presented in that case included very egregious behavior, including that the defendant posed as the victim/plaintiff online and falsely posted that he had killed his parents. That caused the police to storm the Plaintiffs= home. Harassment does not need to be that extreme to contribute to a valid claim of defamation and some related claims, however.
